Novel Study Unit – Lord of the Flies

Writing Tasks (50 Marks)

a) Writing in Role: Students will take on the perspective of a certain character in Lord of the Flies and will recap the events of a specific chapter through their chosen character’s perspective.

Marked out of 20. Content /10, Style/Mechanics /10. 300 words.

Due: Monday November 2nd

b) Message in a Bottle: Hypothetical Scenario: As things begin to fall apart on the island Ralph puts a message in a bottle and throws it out to sea in hopes of contacting the outside world.

Your letter should contain a description of events on the island, emotions that Ralph is feeling, and a message for Ralph’s dad. Marked out of 30. Content /10, Style/Mechanics /10, Creativity /10. 300 words.

Due: Friday November 20th

c) Character Sketch: Students will analyze three characters from Lord of the Flies. They will examine their characteristics, and how they display these through their actions. Students will choose a creative method through which to present their character sketches. Marked out of 25 Content /10, Creativity /15.

Due: Friday November 6th

Creative Tasks (50 Marks)

a) Island Model: Students will create a model of the island that the children find themselves on. The model will include specific details relating to the book (accurate geography). Also students will provide a brief written description of the island they have created.

Marked out of 30. Written Component /10 Accuracy /10 Creativity /10.

Due: Monday November 23rd

b) Island Flag: Students will be given the task of designing a flag to represent the children of the island. The flag should reflect what the children value and/or the geography of the land. This task will include a short written description of the flag created giving information on the symbols used, etc.

Presentation Tasks (50 marks)

a) Acting a Scene: In groups of four students will act out a scene from Lord of the Flies. The scene can be taken from any chapter, but it must involve some sort of conflict (confrontation, assembly, etc.).

Marked out of 40. Professionalism /10, Script /10, Organization /10, Creativity /10.

Presentation Date: Wednesday November 18th

b) A Short List of Necessary Items: Students will individually present a list of ten items that they would bring with them, if able, on a deserted island. The list is to be practical, and in the presentation students will outline each item’s use and importance to their survival.
